Bilateral maculopathy in a thalassemia patient on iron chelation therapy: a case report

چکیده

A 10-year-old Malay girl with underlying HbE/beta-thalassemia, on regular blood transfusion and deferoxamine iron chelation therapy, presented two-month history of bilateral blurring vision. On examination, her vision was 6/36 both eyes. Other optic nerve functions were normal. Anterior segment examination eyes unremarkable. Fundus revealed dull foveal reflex. Optical coherence tomography maculae showed increased central subfield thickness. fluorescence angiography patchy hypofluorescence over macular region for [...]

Triple Drug Iron Chelation Therapy in Thalassemia Major; A Case Report

Regular packed cell transfusion in patients with thalassemia major leads to iron overload. Chelation therapy is one of the important aspects of thalassemia care as iron overload causes significant cardiac, hepatic, and endocrine dysfunction. We report a case of thalassemia major with severe iron overload causing cardiac and liver dysfunction who benefitted from triple drug chelation therapy. Tr...

Iron Chelation Therapy in Thalassemia Syndromes

Transfusional hemosiderosis is a frequent complication in patients with transfusion dependent chronic diseases such as thalassemias and severe type of sickle cell diseases. As there are no physiological mechanisms to excrete the iron contained in transfused red cells (1 unit of blood contains approximately 200 mg of iron) the excess of iron is stored in various organs. Cardiomyopathy is the mos...

A Rare Case of Eosinophilic Cholecystitis Presenting in a Patient with Thalassemia Intermedia; a Case Report

Eosinophilic cholecystitis is a rare inflammatory condition encountered in surgical cholecystectomy specimens. In terms of histopathology, it is defined by transmural infiltration of eosinophils composing more than 90% of leukocytes. We here report a case of 19-year-old male admitted with thalassemia intermedia and with severe left upper quadrant pain. The patient underwent open splenectomy and...

The occurrence of multiple DCs is rare in the absence of these syndromes. Case Presentation: A 28-year-ol...

Role of Iron Chelation Therapy in Thalassemia Major.

iron chelating therapy is the only method available for preventing early death caused mainly by myocardial and hepatic iron toxicity. Although desferrioxamine (DFO) has been available for treating transfusional iron overload from the early 1960s, the era of modern and effective iron chelating therapy started only 20 years ago with the introduction of subcutaneous DFO infusions by portable pumps...
